Calendula - A simple (one herb) salve, gentle enough for a baby's skin, can
be used by adults, too.

Chest Rub - Warms and soothes. Rub liberally into the chest, throat, and neck
areas. Cover for warmth. Contains: Comfrey leaf, Mullein flower, Lobelia, Peppermint,

of our Herb Hill distributors in New York City. Lata's customers love it so
much we sometimes have trouble keeping her supplied. Contains: Violet leaf,

Coconut Oil, Aloe Gel, Vitamin E, Beeswax, Borax, and Violet fragrance oil.

Calm Balm - This lovely balm is one of Gretchen's favorites. She rubs it on
before bedtime to help bring on a relaxing sleep. She applies it liberally to
inner arms, breasts, and abdomen. The more one uses, the greater the effect.
Contains: Chamomile flowers, Chickweed, Dandelion, Lemon Balm, Motherwort, Mugwort,
RedClover, Squawvine, Wild Lettuce, and essential oils.

Useful Simples
We can make a simple salve out of any herb available here at Herb Hill. Simples
still sell for $4.99 per ounce. Some of our favorite simples are:
Blue Vervain: A relaxing rub to help you sleep, and maybe "rev
up" the libido.
Capsicum - Hot pepper oil contains capsaicin. We use only organically
grown hot peppers to make our oil here at Herb Hill.
Dandelion - Dandelion is soothing to the skin, especially breast
tissue.
Motherwort: With a little vanilla scent added it's a luscious
rub for anxiety.
Mullein - Mullein has relaxing and soothing properties and
is very versatile.
Plantain - Plantain is a favorite all-purpose salve for bites,
stings, etc.
Self-Heal - One customer finds self-heal is effective for just
about everything of a surface nature that needs attention.
Self-Heal is astringent in nature.
Yarrow - Healing and astringent, it's good for cuts and other
booboos on people and animals. Gretchen used to heal her goldfish scrapes with
yarrow salve.
Rubs That Comfort and Soothe
Bursa Balm -. Contains: Ginger root, Burdock root, Wormwood, Mullein flower,
Rue, St. John's Wort and essential oils. Use as needed. Pregnant women should
avoid products with Rue.

Flim Flam Jam - is a favorite rub of customers who use it on muscles or joints.
May be too stimulating for some people to use at night. Contains: St. John's

Animal Tick Flee - This recipe from Lady Barbara Hall contains Distilled Water,
Rose Geranium Oil, Citronella, and Bay Leaf tincture in a 4 OZ mister bottle.
Spray your pet liberally under and over before entering tick-infested areas.

Bug Bite Balm - Use as needed for insect bites (in case you forgot to apply
your Buzz Off and Fly Away.) Contains: Viper's Bugloss, Plantain, Echinacea,

essential oils.

Buzz Off - works hard to discourage mosquitoes. Cover exposed skin with a generous

pregnant women should avoid products which contain rue or tansy. However, small

St. John's Wort - Everyone's favorite simple is very versatile. Gretchen uses

available) This product should be kept handy whenever stings are a possibility.
An ocean swimmer, Gretchen uses it on jellyfish stings, which are relieved within

Burdock Root - In her book, Healing Wise, Susun Weed suggests using Burdock
root for "inflamed, reddened, or heated skin conditions. The effectiveness is
increased if Burdock root tincture or tea is taken concurrently."

Important notice: When fresh plant oil is emulsified with water, the shelf life
of the product is shortened accordingly. Use these creams up quickly. The amazing
benefits of fresh plant creams make up for their short shelf life. Hint: Always

A recent review of "Herbs From the Outside In":
I am writing you all to give a hearty thumbs up on Gretchen's book.
Luckily I ordered a copy several weeks ago and it came to me in all it's xeroxed
glory! This book is a true labor of love! Our "jazz lady" (oh yes, you will
find Gretchen is a lady of many talents) not only put together this extensive
compilation of information on so many local herbs and plants, but she did so
with wonderful personal tales and her many years of experiences in between.
And as a bonus, the herbs are all listed alphabetically for user friendly acces
to information. She also generously includes many tried and true formulations
for her wonderful balms and salves. The pictures she includes just add to the
earthy, homey feel of this "Herbal Guide". I actually recommended this book
to my own herbal mentor for her herbal apprenticeship class. I truly hope Gretchen
eventually is able to publish it in a book form, because I will be one of the
first in line to acquire a copy for myself.
